Tooth Extraction

Our dentists understand that tooth extraction can be a source of anxiety for many patients. We are committed to providing gentle, efficient and compassionate extraction services when removing a tooth is the best solution for oral health. Our priority is to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure and support optimal healing afterwards.

When Do We Recommend Tooth Extraction?

While preserving natural teeth is always our preference, there are circumstances when extraction becomes the most appropriate treatment option:

  • Severe Decay or Damage — Extraction may be necessary to prevent infection and relieve pain when a tooth is decayed or damaged beyond repair, or a filling or crown is lost or damaged.
  • Advanced Periodontal Disease — Teeth affected by severe gum disease that has caused significant bone loss and tooth mobility may require extraction to prevent further damage to surrounding teeth and bone structures.
  • Impacted Wisdom Teeth — Third molars (wisdom teeth) frequently become impacted or emerge at problematic angles, potentially causing pain, infection, crowding or damage to adjacent teeth. Preventive extraction is often recommended in these cases.
  • Orthodontic Treatment — Some orthodontic treatment plans require the removal of certain teeth to address severe crowding or to create space for proper alignment of the remaining teeth.
  • Fractured Teeth — Teeth fractured below the gumline or split vertically through the root often cannot be saved and require extraction.
  • Infection Risk — For patients with compromised immune systems, teeth with infection risk may be extracted to protect overall health.

Why Choose Noranda Dental for Tooth Extraction

When facing tooth extraction, selecting the right dental practice is crucial for a positive experience and optimal outcome. Here are three compelling reasons to choose Noranda Dental for your extraction needs.
Experienced Team
Our three dentists bring extensive experience in performing both simple and complex extractions. They understand the physical and emotional aspects of the procedure and take time to address your concerns, explain the process thoroughly and ensure you feel informed, empowered and comfortable every step of the way.
Comprehensive Care
At Noranda Dental, we view extraction as part of your overall treatment plan, not just an isolated procedure. Before recommending extraction, we carefully consider all preservation options to save your tooth. Following extraction, we provide guidance on tooth replacement alternatives when appropriate, including implants, bridges or dentures.
Modern Technology
Using the latest dental technology and techniques, we make extractions as efficient, precise and comfortable as possible. Our modern equipment allows for detailed visualisation of the extraction site, enabling our dentists to plan and execute the procedure with minimal trauma to surrounding tissues. This approach promotes faster healing and reduces post-operative discomfort.

Frequently Asked Questions

The healing process following a tooth extraction varies from person to person, but there are general timeframes you can expect. At Noranda Dental Clinic, we find that most patients progress through several distinct healing stages after having a tooth removed.

What to Expect Immediately After Your Extraction Procedure

Within the first 24 hours, a blood clot forms in the socket—this clot is crucial for proper healing and should be protected. During the first few days, you may experience some discomfort, swelling, and minor bleeding, all of which are normal parts of the recovery process.

What to Expect After a Few Days of Healing

Any significant discomfort should subside substantially by the end of the first week. The soft tissue healing typically progresses well, and you'll likely feel much more comfortable. Most patients can resume their normal activities within 48-72 hours, though we recommend avoiding strenuous exercise during this initial recovery period.

Soft tissue healing is generally complete within 3-4 weeks. However, the underlying bone remodelling continues for several months after the extraction. Complete healing of the socket, where new bone fills the space, typically takes 3-6 months, depending on the size of the extraction site and your individual healing capacity.

We're Here to Guide You Through the Healing Process

Our team provides comprehensive aftercare instructions following any extraction procedure. These include guidance on managing discomfort, appropriate cleaning techniques and specific foods to avoid during recovery.

Healing time may be slightly longer for more complex extractions, such as wisdom teeth removal, and we would discuss this with you beforehand based on your specific situation.

If you're experiencing prolonged pain, swelling or bleeding beyond what we've advised is normal, please contact our Noranda, WA, dental practice promptly so we can assess your healing and provide appropriate care.

Our Extraction Procedure

At Noranda Dental, we take every measure to ensure your tooth extraction is as comfortable and stress-free as possible:

Comprehensive Assessment

We begin with a thorough examination, including dental radiographs, to evaluate the tooth and surrounding structures. This helps us plan the most appropriate extraction approach.

Effective Pain Management

We use modern local anaesthetic techniques to ensure the area is completely numb before beginning the procedure. We also offer additional comfort options for patients with dental anxiety.

Gentle Extraction Techniques

Our dentists employ careful extraction methods that minimise trauma to surrounding tissues. Depending on the complexity of your case, we perform either:

  • Simple extractions for visible teeth using specialised instruments
  • Surgical extractions for teeth that are broken, impacted or below the gumline

Post-Extraction Care

Following the procedure, we provide comprehensive aftercare instructions and, when necessary, prescribe appropriate pain management medication to ensure your comfort during healing.
